DIRECTORS STATEMENT

It was a sunny afternoon in L.A. when Monica started talking about this one moment in her life when she ran away from home. I remembered her describing the scene, an intense fight with her mother about her sexuality and mental illness. The intense back and forth resulted in her finding refuge in a love motel down the street. I found it fascinating that of all places she would run to, it was a grimy dark motel close to her home. It was almost as if the Love Motel is a metaphor for her own mind, a haven and safe place where she would not only have to deal with her own trauma and mental illness but the impending assault from her Chinese mother.

When a mother’s old Chinese values collide with her daughters need for acceptance and love, who will pick up the pieces when the fight is over?
